Meet Our Client: Mark Kessler
Born and raised on Cleveland’s east side, Mark Kessler has a lifelong love for the community that surrounds the Margaret Wagner Apartments located at 2375 Euclid Heights Boulevard in Cleveland Heights. Since 2003, the complex has provided adults age 62 or older in the Greater Cleveland area who meet Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) income requirements with secure, affordable and supportive housing.
Much of Mark’s career involved teaching in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District, but he worked other jobs as well. While his work was very fulfilling, it didn’t make him wealthy, so when he was ready to retire from full-time work, he knew he’d need to find affordable housing.
“The Margaret Wagner Apartments were my first choice, but I completed applications for several HUD subsidized senior housing locations,” says Mark, who after being on a waiting list was able to move into the Margaret Wagner Apartments in 2018.
Why the Margaret Wagner Apartments? Mark’s three main reasons include their affordability, their location, and the people – his fellow residents and the facility’s management staff).
In the years he’s lived at Margaret Wagner Apartments, Mark has gotten to know many of his neighbors as well as the administrative staff of the building. “We are there for each other through thick and thin, ups and downs. It’s a good group of people. Everyone is nice and communicative, and we support and help each other when needed. And that includes management who care about the well-being of the residents,” he says.
Management has had a lot of information to share with residents thanks to a significant renovation project that began last summer. Included in the renovation is the addition of 20 new one-bedroom first floor units, updating of the existing 60 units, new community spaces, improved accessibility, upgrades to building systems, elevator modernization, new roofing and more.
Mark, who continues to work as a substitute teacher a few days a week at Cleveland Heights High School, keeps things simple. He currently lives very comfortably in a studio apartment that once renovated will be a one-bedroom unit.
“The improvements that have already been made are beautiful. There is ample parking, a computer room, a community room, an outdoor courtyard where I can sit and listen to the birds, and more,” says Mark. “Our utilities other than phone and cable are included with the rent, and we have a service coordinator to provide support and resources including things like access to an affordable senior cable service.”
