Volunteer Story Highlights Triumph: Benjamin Rose Celebrates You!

[CLEVELAND, OH] – Benjamin Rose is excited to shine a spotlight on an inspiring volunteer story as we invite the community to join us for “Triumph: Benjamin Rose Celebrates You!” This special event, taking place on Saturday, August 2, 2024, at Benjamin Rose (11890 Fairhill Rd, Cleveland, OH 44120), will feature client testimonials and awards, followed by a lively community fair.

Inspiring Volunteer Story: Lisa Richardson

Lisa Richardson of Philadelphia refers to herself as a “differently-abled retired registered nurse.” When an on-the-job injury in 2008 forced her to leave nursing, she sought meaningful ways to contribute and found an opportunity with Benjamin Rose through AARP. Initially involved in writing postcards and letters, Ms. Richardson soon found a role perfectly suited to her background: making wellness calls to clients dealing with social isolation.

In February 2023, Ms. Richardson began calling Benjamin Rose client Bertell Dickson. On their first call, they made an instant connection. “She’s such a sweetheart, she reminds me of my grandmother,” Ms. Richardson said. Their conversations, occurring every week to two weeks, cover a range of topics from health concerns to family and friends, and have fostered a deep bond.

“I pay attention to what Miss Bertell says and how she says it to make sure she’s not having any psychological issues,” Ms. Richardson explained. “I try to be a friend rather than just someone checking in. I honestly feel that Miss Bertell is more than just someone I’m volunteering to make a call to.”

The opportunity for the two to meet in person arose with the Triumph event. Ms. Richardson eagerly reached out to Rebekkah Whelan, the Manager of Volunteer Services at Benjamin Rose, to express her interest in attending the event and meeting Miss Bertell. “When I told her I was coming to Cleveland, she was even more excited than I was,” said Ms. Richardson.

TRIUMPH Details:

Time: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Activities: The community fair will feature information booths from local partners, raffles, live music, dancing, and a produce giveaway hosted by the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

Special Guests: Ahmaad Crump, in-arena host of the Cleveland Cavaliers, will emcee the event, with live performances by Cecil Rucker Jr. and Good Vibes.

Food: Attendees can enjoy hot dogs and water while supplies last.

We are thrilled to welcome everyone to our community fair, where you can connect with local organizations, participate in engaging activities, and enjoy live entertainment. This event provides a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the impactful work Benjamin Rose does for older adults in our community.

Luncheon and Fundraising

Prior to the community fair, we will host a sold-out luncheon to honor our clients and celebrate their inspiring stories. This portion of the day will include moving client testimonials, awards, and a keynote address from Dr. Olusegun Ishmael, Chief Operating Officer and President of the Hospital Division of MetroHealth.

Proceeds from “Triumph: Benjamin Rose Celebrates You!” will support Benjamin Rose’s essential services, which include Home & Community-Based Services, Housing & Homeownership, Financial Wellness, and Research, Education & Advocacy.
